Overheard: New Years Eve

Sipping sparkling cider...

Jensie: My burp tastes like sprite!
Asher: You licked your bird?!

-------------------------------------------------------
Gazing at the fire...

Nate: So imagine Abraham Lincoln reading his law books by the fire.
Me: That would be hard.
Jensie: No kidding, he was shot by a gun!

The After Christmas Special

In their Christmas jams- a Bigler tradition.  Frankie tore off the wrapping and joyfully exclaimed "My old jammies!  The ones that used to be mine!"

This year we got our first real tree.  After a trip to the butterfly house at Calloway Gardens we decided to cover the tree in birds and butterflies.  We cut paper butterflies and stuck them to every branch.  Of course Frankie played Mommies and babies with them, and by the time Christmas rolled around their was nary creature to be seen. (Why don't people say "nary" anymore)?
I'd intended to decorate the tree with all of our favorite ornaments too, but then Jensie deemed it a "nature only" tree and I had to fight even to convince her to let Asher string up his preschool-made beauties.  She did eventually concede, but only on the condition that anything "not naturey" be relegated to back of the tree.

As Frankie says, "Santa snuck in on us."  In exchange for a tall glass of almond milk and a handful of gluten-free cookies, Santa left a doll house for Frances, a castle for Asher, and a cage for Jensie's new yellow parakeet--Louis.

We didn't get to eat Pizza Dough after all.  He flew away one afternoon and never came back.  We had Soyrizo tacos instead. We still have his brother, Big Money, though so we'll try again on Easter.

It was a white Christmas--the first in living memory.  Snow fell on Christmas day and lasted until the next morning.  Having Nate home to stay, my sister come to live, and a white powdered lawn made this year's Christmas especially merry.

Angles of Asher

"Guess what?!"  is how Asher begins each sentence.  All day, everyday.  And then he'll need to pause and invent a story on the spot.

Asher is compassionate and kind.  He's exceptionally sensitive.  Careless words hurt him deeply and he needs hugs and reassurance from us several times a day.  Each of his three preschool teachers has pulled me aside to let me know he's the secret favorite.  Miss Linda admitted she'd "never met a sweeter soul."  We don't know what it is, but "there's something special about that boy."

A budding geek, he loves computer games and maritime history.  Looking for an obscure fact about the sinking Titanic?  He's your guy!

He loves adventure, but is not spontaneous--he's up for hiking, camping, and especially bonfires, just as long as you let him know about it beforehand.  He's a careful planner, and is very detail oriented.  His days are full of Star Wars action figures, lego boats, and racetracks.  We don't own any actual racetrack pieces so he makes crazy obstacle courses with our wooden blocks.

The boy loves to wrestle.  He and his friends will karate chop and ninjatize each other until they're sticky with sweat.

He loves sushi, steak, and chicken, and is a reluctant  protesting vegetarian.  He likes Darth Vader, dessert, and is a self-proclaimed fan of "the dark side." If a five year old can be passionate about anything, his passion is music videos from OK GO, Beastie Boys, and Foo Fighters.

He taught himself to swim and is fearless in the deep end.  Asher is obsessed with night-vision.  He always wears his undies backward so he can see the pictures.  He hates spiders, most bugs, and work.

Flashback Friday: Hey! Unto You a Child is Born!

Me, as Imogene Herdman at the Springville Playhouse, age 10
Imogene had the baby doll but she wasn't carrying it the way she was supposed to, cradled in her arms.  She had it slung up over her shoulder, and before she put it in the manger she thumped it twice on the back.

I heard Alice gasp and she poked me. "I don't think it's very nice to burp the baby Jesus," she whispered, "as if he had colic."  Then she poked me again.  "Do you suppose he could have had colic?"

I said, "I don't know why not," and I didn't.  He could have had colic, or been fussy, or hungry like any other baby.  After all, that was the whole point of Jesus--that he didn't come down on a cloud like something out of "Amazing Comics," but that we was born and lived...a real person.

Overheard: Time to Intervene

Jensie: Where's the broom?  I need the broom.

Frankie: Whatcha sweepin'?

Jensie: Nothing.  I need to use it to break down a door.

Faces of Frances

Frankie is a firecracker.  She never stops talking, ever.  She is always the first one out of bed and jumps on our heads demanding cereal.  She loves legos, race cars, and frilly dresses.  She changes her clothes six times a day, each outfit pouffier than the next.  She's imaginative and goofy and loves to tell "Why did the chicken cross the road?" jokes.  The punchline is always "To buy a pizza!," but it is never okay for us to guess correctly.

She loves pink and purple.  She likes to go to nursery, but thinks Sacrament meeting takes too long.  She pauses throughout her day to tell us how much she loves us.

Every night at bedtime she requests the "Sunshine Princess" song.  Oh you don't know that one?  It goes like this..."There is sunshine in my princess soul more glorious and bright than shines in any earthly castle for Jesus is my light!..."

She sings lots of silly made-up songs, all of which include the words "when the peaceful happy moments roll."

Big things are mommies and little things are babies and that is that.  Our house is full of mommy screwdrivers, and baby library pencils.

She only nibbles at healthy food to save room for candy.

She has a feisty temper and has to sit in time-out at least once a day.  She always says sorry and gives lots of hugs.

Grandma Bonnie made her her a silky cape that she wears everywhere because she's "Butterfly Girl to the Rescue!"  She rides bikes and takes long baths.  She loves stories about when she was a baby and is sad when it's not her turn to say the evening prayer.

She shouts "Giddyup Humpback!" when Nate packs her around.

Mohenjo-Daro

It was a dark and windy night as the town of Mohenjo-Daro slept.  Little did anyone know that this was their last night...because an enemy was invading that second.

When the enemy shot its first cannon blow, that's when the people of Mohenjo-Daro woke up!

They all tried to hide, but most were found and killed!

The others ran, but they were caught and killed.

Me: Wow Jensie, that's intense.

Jensie: Yeah, I was going to have them sold into slavery and then killed, but I thought that'd be too tragic for you.

Soap Box

Can I preach for a minute?  Trick question!  Of course I can, it's my blog.

We bought three more ducks--two Muscovy drakes and a silver hen named Dove.  Pizza Dough (great name Frankie!), the largest male, is slated to be the main event of this year's Christmas feast.

We haven't succeeded in going completely veg, but I can count on one hand the number of times I ate corporate meats this year. Eating food we've raised ourselves has been a really positive change for our family.  For one thing, it's taught me to be much less wasteful...You know what? Never mind.  Being preachy is taking too much time and effort today.  Suffice it to say that I'm pleased as punch to be a more principled conscientious eater, and am proud of how well treated and fed our animals are.

Speaking of which...our fridge is a total babysitter's nightmare.  See?

It's jam packed with greens and goodies for our feathered friends, but there's nothing good to snack on.  Wanna know why I took this picture?  'Cause one night I hired this cute girl to watch the kids and when I was walking her through the house I opened the fridge and told her she could eat anything she wanted. By the look on her face it was clear that she wouldn't be raiding the cupboards after the kids went to bed.  I felt bad, but secretly thought it was hilarious.  I tried to make up for it by bringing her a Snickers bar when I got back.

I would stock a Candy Cupboard for just such occasions, but I lack the willpower to withstand such a thing myself.  I'd be like Goldie Hawn in Death Becomes Her pre fountain-of-youth potion.  Remember?  So for now nothing changes--the sitters will just have to suck it up. Lucky ducks.

Flashback Friday: HUBBA HUBBA

These were taken at his parents' house the first Thanksgiving we spent together--which, as it happens, was our third date--which, incidentally, was two days after our first date.

Girls used to stop me on my way to class and ask "Are you dating Nate Bigler?"

I'd say "Uh, yeah...why?"

Then inevitably that total stranger would say something like "He has such a nice ass."

And I'd walk away wondering Who says that? or Did that just happen in real life?

But seriously, he does.  Lucky for you I keep those pictures all to myself.
